Portable Generator Hookups in Wesley Chapel, FL
Circuit Lists for Gas and All-Electric Houses|Inlets, Interlocks, and Manual Transfer Switches|Licensed & Insured, EC13011268
Mention the generator's make and model and whether the house has gas service.
When Hurricane Milton crossed Florida in October 2024, most homes in the Wesley Chapel area, though not all, lost power for a day or more, the Neighborhood News reported, and many households threw out what was in the refrigerator. A week after the storm, many homes were still running on gasoline generators.

Gas and Electric appliances in an outage
What a Gas Appliance Still Needs From a Generator
A gas appliance takes its heat from the pipe and only its controls from the panel. In an outage, a gas water heater, range, dryer, or furnace asks a generator for an igniter, a control board, a vent fan, or a blower, each a 120-volt load. The electric version of the same appliance makes its heat on a 240-volt circuit, and one of those can take most of a portable generator's output by itself.
Wesley Chapel has both kinds of house. About 4,600 homes here heat with utility gas and about 19,700 with electricity, by the Census Bureau's survey estimates. Which kind you own decides how far a portable generator's watts go.
Circuit by circuit
The Same Circuits in a Gas-Piped and an All-Electric House
| Circuit | In a gas-piped house | In an all-electric house |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator and freezer | A 120-volt load, and the first one on the list | The same |
| Water heater | A gas tank with a standing pilot needs no electricity. A tankless or power-vented gas heater needs 120 volts for its controls and fan | A 240-volt load. A tank heater's element can draw 4,500 watts, so it's left off or run alone while other loads wait |
| Cooking | The burner igniters and the oven's controls run on 120 volts | The range is a 240-volt load. A microwave or a countertop appliance on a kitchen circuit stands in for it |
| Clothes dryer | The drum motor and controls run on 120 volts | A 240-volt load, left off |
| Heating and cooling | A gas furnace's blower and controls run on 120 volts. The air conditioner's outdoor unit is a 240-volt load, and whether a portable generator can start it depends on the compressor and the generator's surge rating | The outdoor unit and the indoor air handler are both 240-volt loads, with the same question for the compressor |
The Breaker List
A Breaker List for Generator Power
-
1
1. Mark each breaker
With the panel directory in hand, each breaker gets one of three marks: runs on the generator, runs alone, or stays off. In a gas-piped house, the first group is long. In an all-electric one, the 240-volt breakers fill the other two.
-
2
2. Add up the first group
The running watts of those circuits are added and compared with the generator's rated output, with room left for motors to start. If the total doesn't fit, a circuit moves down a group.
The hookup and the county Permit
An Interlock or a Transfer Switch, Under a Pasco Permit
The list points to the hardware. With an interlock, the breakers marked to stay off are worth labeling before the first outage. A short list suits a manual transfer switch.
The hookup goes under a Pasco County electrical permit. The permit application and the county inspection are ours to arrange.
We don't install standby generators or the automatic transfer switches that go with them, and we don't do generator maintenance.

Our house has natural gas. Can a portable generator run on it?
The panel in our garage has no main breaker of its own. Can it still take an interlock?

Pricing
Quotes for a Wesley Chapel Generator Hookup
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
If the hookup needs attention later
03If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
