Include the number of bedrooms and a count of the alarms on the ceilings.
The smoke alarms in a newer house went up together in the last weeks of construction, wired to house power and to each other. About 12,000 of Wesley Chapel's 27,000 homes have four or more bedrooms, and a four-bedroom house built to Florida's alarm layout has at least five alarms on one interconnect wire.

Counting the Alarms
How Many Alarms a Four- or Five-Bedroom House Has
That comes to between five and eight alarms on one wire, depending on the floor plan. A bonus room, den, or loft now used as a bedroom adds one more, joined to the others by a wire run from the nearest alarm.
| Position | Count in a four- or five-bedroom house | What goes there at replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Each bedroom | Four or five | A smoke alarm |
| Outside each sleeping area | One, or two where the owner's suite sits apart from the other bedrooms | A combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, in a house with an attached garage or a gas appliance |
| Each additional story | One on any floor that has no bedroom-hall alarm of its own | A smoke alarm |
| The interconnect wire | One, linking all of them | Reused. Each new alarm joins it through a new plug-in harness |
One line for the house
Why Same-Age Alarms Come Down Together
Alarm makers rate a smoke alarm for about 10 years, so when one unit starts its end-of-life chirp, the others are on the same clock.
The interconnect is the other reason. The signal one alarm sends down that wire is specific to its maker, and so is the plug that joins each alarm to the house wiring. One new alarm from a different line may not sound with the old ones or may not be listed for use with them. So a house's new alarms are kept to one line.
The replacements run on house power with a battery behind them, as the originals did.
We don't install or monitor fire alarm systems or burglar alarm systems.

Every alarm in the house went off at once, then stopped. Which one started it?
Several alarms are chirping. Are they all worn out?

Estimates and Hourly Visits for Alarm Work
A whole-house replacement is quoted as an estimate. A visit for one chirping or dead alarm is billed by the hour.
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.
If an alarm we installed fails
05If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
