A portable generator hookup in New Port Richey must pass an inspection before Duke Energy allows it to be used. Duke serves the city, and its rules leave that inspection to the local inspecting authority. Inside the city limits, that authority is the city's Building Division.

Duke's rule and the city's inspection

Duke's Conditions for Connecting a Portable Generator

Duke's service requirements for Florida, revised April 1, 2026, say a portable generator may be installed beyond the meter enclosure, on the customer's side, provided the installation has been inspected by the local inspecting authority and has the proper transfer scheme. They also say generators must be connected so that no backfeeding occurs through the service entrance. A cord from the generator into a dryer outlet meets neither condition.

We apply for the city's electrical permit and schedule its inspection. At an address outside the city limits, the permit and the inspection are Pasco County's.

When an Older Panel Can't Take an Interlock

An interlock must be one that is made and listed for the panel it goes on. If the maker of an older or discontinued panel offers none, a plate cut to fit isn't a listed kit. The hookup is then a manual transfer switch beside the panel, wired to the circuits chosen for generator power, or a new panel that has a listed kit.

We don't install standby generators or the automatic transfer switches that go with them.

Frequently asked questions

The Paperwork Behind a Generator Hookup

The house came with a generator inlet already on the wall. Is it good to use?

Not unless it was permitted and inspected and still has its transfer equipment. A previous owner's inlet may have been wired without a permit, or wired to a breaker without an interlock. The city's permit record for the address answers the first question. An interlock plate on the panel, or a transfer switch beside it, answers the second.

Does Duke need a contract or an application for a portable generator hookup?

For a portable generator, Duke's requirements name only the inspection and the transfer scheme. The contract they describe is for standby generators that can energize the utility's equipment or run in parallel with its system, even for a moment. An interlock or a manual transfer switch connects the house to one source at a time, so the generator and the utility's line aren't joined.

Pricing

Your Estimate for the Inlet and Transfer Equipment

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installations, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Parts, labor, and the warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
