In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in September 2017, a portable generator caught fire on the back porch of a Spring Hill house, and the house was lost. On a generator hookup, one decision sets where your generator runs every outage from then on: which outside wall the inlet goes on. We settle that first.

The 2017 Porch Fire

A Porch Fire After Irma, and the Wall Your Inlet Goes On

Hernando County firefighters were called to the home after a generator exploded on a back porch. Both people living there got out and called 911. Crews found heavy fire and smoke, and the flames spread into the attic. Investigators said the generator caught fire and the fire spread to the house, and firefighters asked everyone to use extreme caution when placing generators near homes.

Without a hookup, a generator has to sit wherever its extension cords can reach the appliances. With one, it runs at the end of one heavy cord plugged into an inlet on an outside wall, so the inlet's location decides where the generator sits from then on.

Placing the inlet for the yard spot

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tells owners to run a portable generator outside only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away, and not on a porch or in a carport. So we start with the patch of open yard where yours can sit, and put the inlet on the wall that faces it. A back-porch wall, the wall beside the garage door, and the spots under a window or the roof overhang are the ones we steer away from. The cord is then chosen to reach that spot.

Where our work stops:

We don't install standby generators or automatic transfer switches, and we don't do generator maintenance. We connect portable generators.

How the install is laid out

Yard First, Then the Wall and the Cord

  1. 1

    1. Where the generator will run

At the estimate visit, we walk the outside of the house with you and pick a level spot in the open yard that you can reach with the generator during a storm.

  2. 2

    2. The wall that faces it

The inlet goes on the outside wall nearest that spot, and the run from the inlet back to the panel follows from there.

  3. 3

    3. The cord length

We tell you the cord length the spot needs, so the generator doesn't have to move closer to the house to plug in.

Spring Hill Generator hookup FAQ

Cords, Lanais, and Moving an Inlet

Can the generator run on our screened lanai if we leave the screen door open?

No. A lanai sits under the house roof, which puts it in the same class as the porch and carport the CPSC warns against. Screens and an open door don't carry the exhaust away from the house.

Our inlet is already on the back-porch wall. Can you move it?

Yes. Moving an inlet means a new run from the interlock or transfer switch to a different outside wall, and the old inlet is removed.

The only open yard is in front of the house. Can the inlet face the street?

It can go on any outside wall with a workable run to the panel, including the front.

Where does the cord go when the inlet is on a side wall?

Along the ground from the inlet to the generator, clear of walkways and the door you'll be using. The inlet is what keeps the cord out of windows and doorways.
