Hot breakers, a dark mark inside the panel door, or a box that hums or crackles. Those are the panel warning signs never to ignore.

The first question about these jobs is whether the panel can be repaired or must be replaced. We answer it based on what the panel's condition supports, with the reasons laid out, before any work starts.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

If the panel is sparking or smoking:

Do not touch it or reach into it. Get everyone away from it, and call 911 if there is smoke, sparks, or fire.

Do not open the panel to turn it off. If the main disconnect is separate, such as at the meter outside, turn that off only if you can reach it safely.

What We Look For

Heat, Burn Marks, and Buzzing: What We Look For

01

Heat at a breaker

A breaker carrying a normal load can feel slightly warm. One that is hot to the touch is telling you about a poor connection: a loose wire at the terminal, a breaker that no longer grips the bus bar firmly, or a circuit loaded right at its limit for hours.

  • A loose or undersized wire at the breaker terminal.
  • A breaker that has worn or burned where it clips onto the bus bar.
  • A circuit running near its rating, such as an air conditioner or a water heater.
  • Two wires under a terminal made for one, called a double tap.
02

Burn marks and melted insulation

Darkened plastic, melted insulation, or a brown or black mark on the bus bar indicates that heat has already caused damage. Where the damage is limited to one breaker and its wiring, a repair may be sufficient. Where the bus bar itself is burnt or pitted, the panel is past repairing.

  • Damage limited to one breaker and wire: breaker and wire end replaced, bus inspected.
  • Pitting or burning on the bus bar: the panel is replaced.
  • Melted insulation on several circuits: the cause is found before anything is turned back on.
03

Buzzing, crackling, or hissing

A panel should be close to silent. A buzz, crackle, or hiss often means arcing at a loose connection or a failing breaker, and arcing makes heat. It is often the first sign people notice, well before anything shows.

  • Buzzing that follows one circuit: that breaker or its connection.
  • Buzzing from the main breaker area: the service connection, which we check first.
  • Crackling with a burning smell: keep clear, and call 911 if there is smoke.
04

Corrosion: the Florida panel problem

Humidity gets into outdoor panels and meter cans, and near the Gulf the air carries salt as well. Light surface corrosion on the bus bar or the main breaker can be cleaned up where the parts underneath are still sound, and corroded breakers are replaced. When corrosion has eaten into the bus bar or spread through the panel, replacement is the fix that lasts.

Repair or Replace

Repair or Replace: How We Decide

  1. 1

    1. You tell us what you've seen or heard

Heat, a smell, a buzz, a mark, a breaker that won't reset, or an insurer's letter.

  2. 2

    2. The panel is opened and inspected

The electrician checks the bus bar, the main breaker, every breaker's grip and terminal, the neutral and ground connections, and signs of water getting in.

  3. 3

    3. You hear the repair-or-replace answer

We show you what we found and explain whether a repair will hold. If it won't, we say so, and you get a written estimate for replacement.

  4. 4

    4. The repair, with your go-ahead

Sound parts cleaned, failed breakers and damaged wire ends replaced, loose connections made right, and each circuit tested.

  5. 5

    5. Replacement, when that's the answer

A replacement is its own job, with its own estimate, permit, power-company coordination, and inspection. We handle all of it.

Panels we recommend replacing outright

Some older panel brands, and panels more than about 30 years old, are ones we recommend replacing rather than repairing.

How Panel Repair Is Billed

How Panel Repair Is Billed

01

Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.

02

Finding out whether a panel can be repaired means opening it and testing it, so the repair visit is billed by the hour.

03

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

04

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

What changes the time and parts on a panel repair

05
  • How far the corrosion or heat damage has spread.
  • Whether replacement breakers listed for that panel are still available.
  • Where the panel sits, such as outdoors on a wall that takes weather.
  • Whether the fault is in the panel or in a circuit leaving it.

Our warranty

06

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked Questions

Electrical Panel Repair Questions

Will my power be off during the repair?

Yes, for part of the visit. Work inside the panel is done with it de-energized, so the house is without power while the electrician works. We tell you before we shut it off, so you can save work on a computer or plan around the refrigerator.

The breakers for my panel aren't made anymore. What then?

If breakers listed for your panel can't be found, that pushes the answer toward replacing the panel. A breaker that merely fits is not the same as one that is listed for it.

What is a double-tapped breaker?

Two wires under a terminal built for one. It turns up in older panels and on inspection reports, and it can loosen and overheat. The fix is usually a short jumper wire, called a pigtail, or an added breaker.

Does panel repair need a permit?

Replacing a panel does, and we handle that as part of the replacement. For smaller repairs, the county decides; if the repair you need calls for a permit, we tell you before work starts and pull it.

Should I have the panel checked before hurricane season?

If it's older, shows corrosion, or has given you any of the warning signs above, yes. A panel in good shape also makes surge protection and a generator hookup simpler to add.
