Pool equipment pad with a variable-speed pump and a heat pump.

When something on a pool changes, its wiring changes too: the pump motor quits, a heat pump takes the gas heater's place, the light goes LED, or a spa joins the yard. Pasco County issues Wesley Chapel's permits under the electrical code Florida enforces, and that code calls for ground-fault (GFCI) protection on a pool pump motor replaced for maintenance or repair, even on a pool wired before pump circuits needed it.

Replacing Pool equipment

When a Pump, Heater, or Pool Light Is Replaced

01

A replaced pump motor and ground-fault protection

On an older pad, the ground-fault rule for a replaced pump motor can turn a motor swap into a motor and a GFCI breaker at the panel that feeds the pump.

A variable-speed pump can also change the circuit. Where its label calls for 230 volts and the old pump ran on 115, the breaker and the connections at both ends are changed to match, and the bond wire goes back on the new motor's lug.

02

A heat pump where a gas heater stood

A gas pool heater uses only a little electricity, for its controls and ignition. A heat pump is a 240-volt load on a breaker sized from its nameplate.

03

An LED light in the old niche

A replacement pool light comes with its cord attached. That cord is pulled through the conduit from the niche to the junction box at the deck, so the cord's length is picked for that distance when the fixture is ordered.

Spas and renovations

Additions That Go on Pasco's Pool and Spa Sheet

A renovation goes through Pasco's pool and spa submittal as new construction does, and the submittal's types of work include above-ground spas and non-swimmable water features.

For an above-ground spa, the county requires a site plan, a floor plan showing the spa against the house with the glass beside it, the location of its electrical components, and the manufacturer's installation specifications. The spa's dedicated circuit and disconnect follow the voltage and amperage specified.

For a renovation that moves or adds pool lights or equipment, it asks for every pool light on the pool layout and for the equipment's location with dimensions and setbacks. Light circuits and junction boxes are routed to the new positions, and the pad's feed and disconnects are moved with the equipment.

Those locations go on the drawing before any work starts, so the run from the panel, the disconnects, and the light circuits are laid out from it.

Frequently asked Questions

Questions That Come Up During a Pool Renovation

We're having the pool resurfaced. Does new wiring for the light need a permit of its own?

Pasco's list of work that requires no permit includes residential pool resurfacing, so the new finish requires none. That doesn't carry over to wiring: a new transformer or a new circuit for the light is electrical work, which the list says still needs a permit regardless of cost. The list also exempts replacing an existing light fixture, and the county decides whether an underwater pool light counts as one.

Our old pump runs on a time clock. Does the clock stay with a variable-speed pump?

A variable-speed pump with a built-in controller maintains its schedule in its own drive and is designed to run continuously. The mechanical time clock that switched the old pump on and off stops doing that job. It's bypassed or removed, or kept to switch something else on the pad, such as a cleaner's booster pump.

Pricing

Billing for Pool Equipment Calls and New Circuits

01

Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.

02

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

03

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Warranty that comes with pool work

04

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
