People ask about surge protection after a storm takes out the TV or the air conditioner's control board, or when a new panel or EV charger is going in.

A whole-house surge protector sits at the panel and limits surges on every circuit, whether they come in from outside or start inside the house. Florida homes need that protection year-round, so there's no off-season to wait for.

Surge Protector or Lightning Arrester

Surge Protector or Lightning Arrester: They're Not the Same Thing

The two are easy to mix up. One protects the power company's lines; the other protects your house.

01

Lightning arresters and the power lines

A lightning arrester is built for the high-voltage side of the power lines; it gives a surge on the line a path to ground. It isn't what protects the wiring and equipment inside your house.

02

Surge protectors and the wiring inside

A whole-house surge protector works on the lower-voltage side, inside your home. Installed at the panel, it limits voltage spikes on every circuit, whether they came in from the grid, from a nearby strike, or from equipment inside the house.

  • Spikes from outside: utility switching, grid faults, and nearby lightning.
  • Fluctuations from inside: air conditioners, pool pumps, and other motors cycling.
  • Covers hardwired equipment a power strip can't reach.
03

Where plug-in strips fit

Point-of-use surge strips are still worth having at the TV and the computer. They are a second layer behind the panel device, and they can't protect the air conditioner, the well or pool controls, or anything hardwired.

What surges do

Surge and Lightning Damage We've Seen Locally

These are the kinds of damage we've seen in local homes.

  • Electronics throughout the house.
  • Electronics in vehicles, damaged beyond repair.
  • In one home, a fire.

A device at the panel limits the surges that do that kind of damage through the wiring.

The code now requires it on new services

Florida's building code adopts the National Electrical Code, which since its 2020 edition has required a surge protective device on home electrical services, including when service equipment is replaced. If you're replacing or upgrading the panel, the code calls for surge protection as part of that job.

How it's Installed

How Whole-House Surge Protection Is Installed

  1. 1

    1. The estimate

We look at the panel, its brand and condition, and the grounding, and recommend the device that matches it.

  2. 2

    2. The grounding check

A surge device sends excess voltage to ground, so the grounding and bonding have to be right. If they aren't, that's corrected first.

  3. 3

    3. Installation at the panel

The device is mounted in or beside the panel on its own breaker or breaker spaces, with the shortest practical leads, and the power is off for a short time while it's connected.

  4. 4

    4. How to read it

We show you the indicator light, so you know when the device has stopped protecting and needs replacing.

What's included

What Surge Protection Includes

Surge protection can be added during another job, such as a panel replacement, an EV charger, or hurricane prep, when the panel is already open.

How Surge Protection Is Priced

How Surge Protection Is Priced

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

What sets the cost

03
  • The panel: some take a device built for that panel; others need a separate unit.
  • Whether grounding or bonding needs correcting first.

Frequently asked Questions

Surge Protection Questions

Do surge protectors wear out?

Yes. Each surge a protector absorbs reduces its capacity, so check the indicator after a big storm.

Will it protect my air conditioner and pool equipment?

A device at the panel limits surges on the circuits feeding them, which a plug-in strip can't.

Will a surge protector stop my breakers from tripping?

No. A breaker trips on overload or a fault, and a surge device doesn't change that. A breaker that keeps tripping is a troubleshooting job.

Is it required by code?

On an existing panel that isn't being replaced, it's an upgrade you choose; on new or replaced home services, Florida's electrical code requires it.

Can you install it on any panel?

On most panels in good condition. If the panel is one we recommend replacing, it makes more sense to put the surge device on the new panel.

Does it help with lightning?

It limits the spikes that nearby strikes send through the wiring. A direct strike on the house is a different problem, and no panel device can stop it.
