Hardwired interconnected smoke alarm in the hall outside a garage door in a Spring Hill, FL home.

Two Spring Hill house fires in 2023 and 2025 burned at the garage end of the house and spread overhead into the roof. In a fire like that, the alarms that wake a sleeping house are the ones outside the bedrooms, at the far end, and they only help if they sound when the garage end does.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

Two Garage Fires

Garage Fires That Reached Spring Hill Attics

01

July 2023: fire at the garage roof

A Spring Hill couple heard lightning hit around 9 p.m. Hours later, in bed, they woke to their smoke alarms, pushed through smoke-filled hallways to get out, and saw flames coming from the roof. Firefighters found fire shooting from the roof of the garage. One of the couple told FOX 13 that without the alarm going off after the lightning hit, they wouldn't have known anything was happening.

02

September 2025: a garage fire overnight

At another Spring Hill home, a fire started in the garage overnight, spread through the attic, and brought the roof down, WFLA reported. The one person inside got out before crews arrived. Fire Rescue said its preliminary indications pointed to lithium-ion batteries.

In both houses, firefighters found fire at the garage end, and it traveled overhead, away from where people were sleeping. That shapes an alarm layout: an alarm in the hall or room the garage door opens into, wired to the alarms outside the bedrooms, so smoke at the garage end sounds every alarm in the house at once.

We don't install or monitor fire alarm systems or burglar alarm systems.

Spring Hill Alarm FAQ

Before and After the Fire Department's Visit

Hernando County Fire Rescue offers to install smoke alarms. Do we still need an electrician?

It depends on what your house has. Fire Rescue's Smoke Alarm Install Request form says its Fire Prevention Division will contact you to schedule a free home safety evaluation, and that during the visit they may replace smoke detector batteries, install new smoke alarms, or both, if needed. The form doesn't describe wiring alarms to house power or linking them together. If your alarms are hardwired, or you want them interconnected, that part is electrical work.

Should there be an alarm in the garage?

Not a smoke alarm. The U.S. Fire Administration says smoke alarms aren't designed for garages, where temperature and humidity fluctuations, dust, fumes, and insects can set them off.

An alarm near the kitchen goes off whenever we cook. Can it be moved?

Yes. We can move it farther from the range along the same hall and keep it on the interconnect. Don't take it down or pull its battery in the meantime.

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
