Hardwired smoke alarm on a bedroom ceiling.

Until 2002, federal standards for manufactured homes required smoke alarms to be installed outside bedrooms. A rule that took effect that September moved them inside each bedroom, wired them to sound together, and put a battery behind each one.

The two layouts

Factory Alarms Before and After the 2002 Rule

HUD's 2002 rule applied to homes on the production line. It didn't reach back to homes already built. An alarm that has been in place since before 2002 is long past its service life.

Matching the newer Layout

Bringing an Older Home to the 2002 Layout

Matching that layout in an older home is more of a wiring job than an alarm swap. An alarm in each bedroom means a box and a cable at each new location, and the cable's routing depends on how the home's ceiling and roof are built.

The standards add two conditions for the alarm circuit: no switch between the breaker and the alarms, and no GFCI protecting it. An alarm fed from a bathroom or kitchen circuit, or from a switched light, can lose house power when someone flips the switch or the GFCI trips. More than one alarm can share a circuit.

Where the home has a gas appliance, the alarm outside the bedrooms can be a combination unit.

Estimates

Quotes for Added and Replaced Alarms

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Coverage on alarms we supply

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Sealed-Battery Alarms in an Older Manufactured Home

Would sealed 10-year-battery alarms match the 2002 layout?

On power, yes. The rule accepts an alarm listed for a 10-year battery in place of house wiring with a backup battery. The rest of the layout still applies: an alarm in each bedroom, one for the living room and kitchen, and all of them linked. Separate battery alarms that, when sounded alone, don't match it.
