The spa is on its pad, the delivery crew has gone, and nothing happens until it has power. What that power looks like depends on the label on the spa.
We run the circuit, set the disconnect, and install GFCI protection on it, matched to the manufacturer's requirements. We also correct tubs someone else hooked up wrong.

Powering a Hot Tub
Plug-and-Play or Hardwired: What Your Spa Needs
120-volt plug-and-play tubs
Smaller spas sold as plug-and-play come with a cord and plug. They plug into their own GFCI-protected outlet on a dedicated circuit, located at the distance from the tub set by code. At 120 volts, many models heat slowly and can't run the heater and the jets at full power simultaneously.
240-volt hardwired spas
Larger spas are wired directly: a two-pole breaker in your panel sized to the amperage on the spa's data plate, a copper conductor feed with an insulated ground wire run to the tub, and a disconnect in between. The feed runs in conduit, buried or along the house, depending on the route from the panel to the pad.
A dedicated circuit
Whatever the voltage, the spa gets its own circuit. Nothing else shares it, so the heater and pumps have the full capacity the manufacturer designed for.
The spa disconnect
The spa's disconnect has to be within sight of the tub, so whoever is working on it can see that no one is about to switch the power back on. It's also set at least 5 feet from the tub's inside wall.
GFCI protection
A ground-fault circuit interrupter monitors the current flowing out and back. If some of it leaks through a failing heater, a cracked pump seal, or a person, the GFCI cuts the power almost instantly. The protection sits in the spa disconnect or at the breaker in your panel.
Bonding
Metal close to the tub, such as a handrail or a metal frame, may need to be bonded to the spa. What applies depends on the spa and where it sits, and we check it on site.
Spa hookups done wrong
- Wrong voltage: A 240-volt spa fed 120 volts heats poorly or not at all, and its controls may throw errors. A 120-volt tub fed 240 volts can burn out its heater and control board the first time it's switched on.
- No GFCI protection: The tub runs, and nothing looks wrong, until a heater element fails or water gets into a connection. Without a GFCI, there's nothing to shut the power off before someone in the water becomes the path to ground.
- Extension cords and borrowed circuits: A plug-and-play tub run on an extension cord, or wired into a circuit that also feeds the patio lights, is a fire and shock risk.
If you suspect your tub was wired like this, keep everyone out of it, switch it off at the breaker if the panel is dry and safe to reach, and call us.

5. Power-up and walk-through
Once the tub is filled, we power it up, test the GFCI, and show you the disconnect and the test button. Spa makers recommend pressing that button regularly, and the owner's manual gives the schedule.

Hot Tub Hookup Pricing
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installations, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.
Our warranty
04If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
