Roof edge and soffit damaged by wind at a home in Spring Hill, FL.

A section of the eaves is gone, there's insulation on the lawn, and the lights still come on. That last part is the one to be careful with. When wind gets under the roof edge, the wiring at risk is the wiring you can't see: in the soffits, across the attic, and in the ceiling boxes below it.

The 2018 tornado

When the Wind Took the Eaves in 2018

On November 2, 2018, an EF1 tornado touched down north of Spring Hill. The National Weather Service's survey put its peak wind at 90 mph and recorded roof damage to 17 homes. WFLA reported that one home in its path had its eaves ripped off and its insulation blown out.

What that storm damaged is where the check starts: the roof edge and everything tucked behind it.

01

What a torn roof edge exposes

Soffit and eave lights sit in boxes fastened to the very framing the wind pulls on. Above the ceiling, cable runs are stapled along the trusses and end in junction boxes and in the boxes for the lights and fans below. When decking lifts or an overhang tears away, that cable can be stretched, crushed, or pulled out of its box, and rain coming through the opening soaks the insulation lying on top of the ceiling boxes.

02

Why working lights prove little

A cable with a crushed jacket or a box holding water can carry current for days before it heats up or trips. Until someone has looked from the attic side, don't turn on the lights or fans in the rooms under the damaged part of the roof, or any soffit or porch-ceiling lights near it. Don't touch a panel the water reached. Stay out of an attic under a damaged roof section, and call 911 if you see smoke or sparks or smell burning.

Spring Hill Storm FAQ

After the Wind: Four Quick Answers

Can we use the rest of the house while we wait?

Rooms well away from the damage, with no wet ceiling, can stay in use. Don't turn on the lights or fans under the damage until they've been checked, and tell us which rooms they are when you call.

The roofer is coming first. Should we wait for them?

Getting the roof covered first keeps more water out of the ceiling boxes, so there's no need to hold the roofer back. Tell us when you call whether the roof is tarped. The attic has to be safe to walk before anyone can follow the cable runs across it.

Wet insulation fell around a ceiling light. Can we switch it back on?

Leave it off. Water that reached the insulation can reach the box and the fixture. We open the box, check the splices and the cable coming into it, and replace the fixture if water got inside.

A bathroom fan vent pulled loose on the roof. Is that electrical?

The vent and the roof opening are the roofer's. The fan in the ceiling is ours: once its duct comes apart, rain can run down to the fan housing, so we check the fan, its box, and its circuit before it runs again.

What we check

Wind-Damage Checks Along the Roof Line

  • Soffit and eave fixtures: Boxes, fixtures, and the cable feeding them, replaced if cracked or wet.
  • Attic cable runs: Followed across the damaged area for pulled staples, crushed jackets, and cable torn from its box.
  • Attic junction boxes: Covers back on and splices checked.
  • Ceiling lights and fans below: Opened and checked for water, and for a box still fastened firmly enough to hold a fan.

How the check runs

Working From the Attic Hatch Down

  1. 1

    1. The attic, where it's safe to walk

Cable runs, junction boxes, and fan housings under the damaged section, followed from box to box.

  2. 2

    2. The boxes below

Ceiling and soffit boxes under the damage are opened and checked for water, loose splices, and support.

  3. 3

    3. One circuit at a time

Anything wet or damaged is replaced. Work bigger than a repair visit is quoted in writing.
