Aluminum wiring repair with a copper pigtail in a home.

Spring Hill's first houses went up in the years when some builders wired homes with aluminum branch circuits. When a 4-point inspection finds wiring issues, the policy can depend on proof that every aluminum connection was repaired using a method the insurer accepts. We make that repair with AlumiConn pigtails.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

Spring Hill's aluminum-era Houses

Spring Hill's Houses From the Aluminum Years

01

About 5,700 homes from the 1960s and 1970s

The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 2 million homes were built with aluminum wire between 1965 and 1973, and its repair guide says cable installed up to the mid-1970s may be aluminum. The Census Bureau's 2020-to-2024 estimate counts 915 Spring Hill homes built in the 1960s and 4,828 built in the 1970s, about 5,700 of roughly 49,000.

02

An aluminum note on a house built in 1980 or later

By the same estimate, 42,859 Spring Hill homes, nearly nine in ten, were built in 1980 or later. On one of those, an inspection note about aluminum may be describing the large multi-strand aluminum that feeds a range, an air conditioner, or the panel itself. Citizens Property Insurance accepts multi-strand aluminum; its concern is single-strand aluminum on branch circuits. We sort out which kind the note means first.

The 4-point form's Aluminum section

The Aluminum Box on a Florida 4-Point Form

The Citizens' sample 4-Point Inspection Form includes a checkbox for branch-circuit aluminum wiring and asks the inspector to describe where it is used. For single-strand wiring, the form requires details of all remediation and states that separate documentation of that work must be provided and certified by a licensed electrician. Citizens' underwriting FAQ lists the only three answers it accepts.

Other carriers set their own rules.

A past owner's repair may have used plain twist-on connectors or aluminum-rated devices. Those connections are redone.

AlumiConn pigtailsYesEvery aluminum-to-copper connection: light fixtures, fan fixtures, outlets, and switches
COPALUM crimp pigtailsYesThe same connections; CPSC says only electricians trained by the manufacturer may install them

Permits for Aluminum Work

Aluminum Work and Hernando County's Exemption List

Pigtailing every aluminum connection isn't named on Hernando County's permit-exemption list, so whether that job needs a permit is the county Building Division's call, and we pull one when it does. The list allows like-for-like replacement of receptacles, switches, and lighting fixtures on existing wiring to proceed without a permit. It keeps new electrical circuits on the permit list and limits its exemptions to projects that don't modify electrical systems. A copper rewire replaces the wiring itself, which puts it outside the like-for-like exemptions.

A permitted job also leaves a county inspection record for the address.

What a Newer Panel or a Few Circuits Change

01

Our house has a newer panel. Does that mean the aluminum was dealt with?

No. The panel and the branch wiring are separate. A panel change moves the circuits to new breakers while leaving the connections at outlets, switches, and lights unchanged.

02

Only a few of our circuits are aluminum. Do they all need the repair?

Yes, or those circuits are replaced with copper. That includes the splice where a later copper run picks up power from an aluminum circuit.

Billing and Estimates

Billing and Estimates for Aluminum Work

01

Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.

02

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

03

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Our warranty

04

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
