Land O' Lakes is one town name with two power companies: Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative and Duke Energy. On a panel job, the two differ on who may take the meter out: Duke Energy allows our electrician to do so, while the cooperative sends its own crew. Some Duke customers also have the company's planned grid work to ask about before a larger service.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

The Meter

What a Pulled Meter Disconnects and What Stays Live

The meter plugs into a socket between the power company's line and the house's wiring. With the meter out, the panel and the circuits past it are cut off from the power company's line, which is what a panel replacement needs. The terminals where the company's line lands in the meter base stay live.

As the homeowner, leave the meter and its seal alone. Duke holds the customer responsible for a broken seal.

A larger service

When the Meter Base Is Replaced Too

A same-size replacement of an indoor panel stops at the panel. A larger service goes further: the meter base and the wires that feed it are replaced too, and those are the parts a meter pull leaves live. For that work, the power company disconnects its line.

At a Duke address, the meter number and service address must match Duke's records before the permit is obtained, and Duke can connect the new service only after the county notifies Duke that the installation is approved.

We apply for the permit, coordinate the shut-off and restore with your power company, and schedule the county's inspection.

Duke's project

Duke Energy's Grid Work in the Land O' Lakes Area

Duke calls the project the Land O' Lakes Substation Optimization: upgrades to power lines and to the area the substation serves, with tree trimming. The announcement is set for 2027, and the first construction is set for 2028, both subject to change, and Duke expects the work to run one to five years, in phases.

Duke also says its grid-improvement work may include meter base conversion and the removal of overhead power lines.

What to ask Duke before a larger service

  • Is my address inside the project's work area?
  • Is the line that serves my house staying overhead?
  • When is work expected at my address, and will it include a planned outage?

Frequently asked questions

If Your Bill Says Duke Energy

Will Duke's project change the meter base at my house?

It may, and only Duke can say. Its list of possible steps names no addresses, and its project page gives a Florida grid-improvement team to contact.

Estimates

Is a Panel Estimate Free in Land O' Lakes?

01

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Our warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
