Well equipment on a post in a backyard, with conduit running toward the house.

Where a Land O' Lakes lot has a well or a dock, a buried run provides a second path for a voltage spike into the house. A whole-home surge device goes in at the main panel, at the other end of that run.

Lightning

Lightning That Strikes a House and Lightning That Misses It

On July 5, 2019, lightning struck the roof of a Land O' Lakes house, sparking a two-alarm fire, according to Pasco County Fire Rescue. A house fire from a strike is the case no panel device carries a promise against, and we don't install rooftop lightning protection. A surge device is designed to handle the strike that misses the house.

Past the Panel

Where the Panel Device Sits, and What Lies Past It

The device is matched to the main panel and wired in there, so it acts on a spike that comes in on the power company's lines before that spike goes out on the circuits.

When lightning hits the ground or water near a well or dock, a spike can start at that point and reach the equipment there before it reaches the house. The panel device isn't between the strike and that equipment.

On a dock, the equipment consists of the lift motor, its switch, and the GFCI protection for the lights and receptacles. The GFCI protection is electronic, so it's exposed along with the motor. At a well, it's the controls beside the well, with the pump past them.

Estimates

The Estimate Comes by Email

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Our warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Surge Device FAQ for Land O' Lakes

Our house is on county water and has no dock. Can a spike still come in from the yard?

Yes, if wiring runs underground to anything in the yard. With nothing wired outside the house, the service is the main way in for the house's power wiring.

Our well's breaker is in the outdoor panel by the meter. Does a surge device in the indoor panel cover the well's circuit?

No. The well's circuit starts at the outdoor panel, where the service arrives, and the indoor panel is fed from there. A device indoors acts only on what reaches the indoor panel. A device at the outdoor panel sits ahead of the house's circuits and the well's.
