New electrical panel mounted at a raised height in a home.

Nearly half of New Port Richey (44%) sits in a Special Flood Hazard Area. A panel upgrade is the time to decide how high the new panel should hang. It's the one day the old box comes off the wall, and the new one can go wherever the wiring will reach.

Where Tide and a West Wind Reach a Panel

Many areas of the city flood on only a high tide and a west wind. The 2026 disaster preparedness guide the city posts for residents tells owners to elevate or relocate electrical panel boxes to places less likely to flood.

A panel hung low on a garage wall is one of the first parts of the house's wiring that rising water meets, and water inside it reaches the breakers and the bus they clip onto.

How high a panel can go on the same wall

Lifting a panel on the wall it's already on has a ceiling. The electrical code requires the handle of the highest breaker to be within 6 feet 7 inches of the floor or platform you stand on to reach it. In a garage whose slab sits lower than the house floor, moving the panel through the wall into the house can gain more height than lifting it on the garage side.

Three Placements

Three Placements for the New Panel

The third placement takes the most planning.

PlacementWhat changes on the houseWho else is involved
Same spotThe new panel goes where the old one was, and the circuits reconnect as they run now.The city's Building Division permits and inspects the work.
Panel raised or moved indoorsThe panel goes higher on the wall or through it into the house. Circuits are extended to reach it, and the meter feed is lengthened. The same city permit and inspection.
Panel and meter raisedThe meter base moves up with the panel, and the service entrance is rebuilt to reach it.The city permit, plus Duke Energy. Duke's installation rules cap a meter's height unless permanent access is provided.

Estimates

Getting a Price on a New Port Richey Panel

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Warranty on the new panel

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked Questions

Panel Height Questions

Can the panel go in a closet once it moves inside?

Not a clothes closet, and not a bathroom: the electrical code keeps breakers out of both. A hallway, laundry, or utility room wall can take an indoor panel, and the estimator can point out a spot at the visit.

Does the city help owners with flood retrofits?

The city's flood page says its building official can assist property owners with retrofitting techniques. A call to that office before the estimate can help settle how high the new panel should go.
