Oak Village's deed restrictions name both of the community's power suppliers, Progress Energy (now Duke Energy) and Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC), and require an underground hookup for homes completed after the rule took effect in 2005.

Two utilities

Duke Energy and WREC in Sugarmill Woods

Sugarmill Woods is served by either Duke Energy or WREC, depending on the address, and your electric bill shows which one. On a Duke service, the conductors on the line side of the meter are typically the company's.

WREC's chart of who owns what, drawn for both overhead and underground service, places the service line and the pad-mounted transformer on the cooperative's side, and the meter socket and meter panel on the member's side. WREC's steps for a service upgrade come from the cooperative.

From the Ground up

What Stays in the Ground and What Changes

A same-size replacement and a larger service both go under a Citrus County electrical permit, which we pull.

Estimates

What a Sugarmill Woods Panel Estimate Settles

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Workmanship and parts coverage

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Digging and Paperwork on a Larger Service

Will the ground by the meter be dug up?

For a larger service, it can be. On a Duke service, a riser conduit installed for the company must extend 3 feet below grade, with bends of at least 30-inch radius, so the ground at the foot of the meter wall is opened. Plants and edging right against that wall are worth moving first.

What does the utility need to know about a larger service?

On a Duke service, it's the customer's job to provide the type of service (underground, here), the main breaker's rating, and the number and size of the service-entrance conductors, so the right meter equipment can be chosen. Those are the details a panel estimate settles.
