A panel job inside Dade City limits waits on the city's permit and, when Tampa Electric's service has to be disconnected, on the reconnect appointment. The city's building department advises that its review takes anywhere from four to six weeks, with applications processed in the order they're received and no expedited service.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

The City's Permit

Dade City's Permit Application for a Panel Job

We apply for the permit. The review time the city provides is for its entire list of permits, from new houses to fences, and it doesn't specify whether an electrical permit alone moves faster.

If the new panel is tied to a date, such as an insurer's deadline or a charger on order, the day to watch is the day the application goes to the city.

A house on the city's historic register can bring one more review, described on our Dade City page. Outside the city limits, the permit is Pasco County's, and the city's review doesn't apply.

01

The description of work

On an electrical permit application, the city asks for the number of amps in the description of work and, where one applies, a Tampa Electric layout number. So the size of the new service has to be decided, and a request opened with the utility where one is needed, ahead of the application.

02

Notarized signatures

The city's application carries a signature block for the contractor and another for the owner, each with its own notary acknowledgment.

Tampa Electric

Tampa Electric Tracks a Service Change by Number

Tampa Electric asks to be notified in advance when a change in service is being considered, so it can verify that its service and metering equipment will remain adequate. It gives each project a Work Request/Layout Number and says every project with the company needs one. Requests to upgrade a service or change an existing one can be submitted through its online Construction Center.

A meter on the back wall

Tampa Electric's service requirements put residential meters on the front wall or an adjacent side wall. When a meter now mounted on the rear of a house is upgraded or relocated, it must be moved to the side or to the front. A service upgrade on a house like that can mean a new meter location and a new run from the meter to the panel.

The disconnect

Tampa Electric's Conditions for Disconnecting a Service

When a service change requires disconnecting the service, the utility's rule is that the customer requests a disconnect and reconnect and arranges the appointment in advance, and its crews handle both. There is one exception. With the company's approval, a licensed electrician may disconnect an overhead service when conditions that include these are met:

  • Size and type: The home has a main rated 300 amps or less and a single-phase overhead service. An underground service is disconnected by the utility.
  • The attachment point: The point where the overhead line attaches to the house stays intact and unaltered. A job that moves it, such as a meter relocated to another wall, waits for the utility's crew.
  • The reconnect date: A reconnect appointment is scheduled with the utility before the service is disconnected. Without one, the company says it isn't responsible for a same-day reconnect.

The exception is optional, and the utility will still do the disconnect when the electrician prefers. A new service entrance has to be inspected and approved before service is restored. We coordinate the shut-off and restore with Tampa Electric and schedule the city's inspection.

Estimates

An Emailed Estimate Ahead of the Application

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

The 30-day and one-year warranty terms

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Dade City Panel Upgrade FAQ

Can any work start while the city is still reviewing the application?

No. The city says work may not start until the application has been processed, payment has been made, and the permit is issued, and that starting early results in penalties and fees.

I own the house but won't be in Dade City to sign. Is that a problem?

If the city asks for the owner's signature, the acknowledgment on its application can be completed either in person or through online notarization, so the form accommodates an owner who signs remotely.

We're adding a tankless electric water heater. Is there anything to ask Tampa Electric?

Yes. Tampa Electric says the customer bears the cost of any upgrades to the company's equipment that an electric instantaneous or tankless water heater makes necessary. Ask the utility whether your address would need any before the heater is ordered.
