A Hudson mobile home fed through a 50-amp cord can draw no more than 50 amps. Citizens Property Insurance sets 100 amps as the minimum for all new-business applications, and the 40 amps it once accepted for mobile homes holds only on policies that were in effect before September 1, 2012.

The Minimum

Reading Citizens' 100-Amp Minimum

Citizens publishes its 100-amp figure in its online FAQ and adds that a rewritten policy has to qualify under the new-business requirement, too. The answer doesn't single out mobile homes among new applications, so ask your agent how it's applied to yours. Meeting the minimum is one requirement among others and doesn't by itself make a home eligible.

A 100-amp Mobile Home

What Has to Carry 100 Amps at a Mobile Home

A 100-amp home is three pieces of equipment sized together, and the three are only as large as the smallest: a 100-amp panel at the end of a 50-amp cord is still a 50-amp home.

01

The rating on the post

The service equipment on a mobile home's post or pedestal must be rated at least 100 amps under the electrical code, so a post installed under that rule may already be large enough, with a 50-amp breaker or receptacle in it feeding the cord. If the enclosure or its main breaker is rated lower, it has to be replaced, and a larger service requires the power company to upgrade on its side of the meter.

02

A feeder where the cord was

A 100-amp supply doesn't come through a cord. It takes conductors sized for 100 amps, run from the post to the home's panel and wired in at both ends, with no plug. The cord and its receptacle come out of service.

03

A 100-amp panel inside

A panel built for a cord's supply has a main breaker and a bus rated for that supply, and a larger feed doesn't change what it can deliver. A 100-amp panel replaces it, and the home's circuits are moved over.

We apply for the permit and schedule the county's inspection.

Frequently asked questions

When 100 Amps Isn't the Whole Answer

Is 100 amps enough, or should the home go to 200?

For Citizens' published minimum, the figure is 100. For the home itself, it depends on what runs on electricity. A home with electric heat, an electric range, a dryer, and a water heater draws far more than one built for gas. A load calculation determines the size, and anything above 100 amps requires equipment on the post rated for it as well.

Our Hudson house was built on site. Does the 100-amp minimum change anything?

Only if its service is under 100 amps. A site-built house with a 100-amp or larger service is already at Citizens' figure, and replacing its panel is then a matter of the panel's condition and the house's load.

We rent our lot in a park. Does the park have a say over the post?

It can. In a land-lease park, the post or pedestal on the lot may be the park's equipment, and Florida's mobile home park law requires the park owner's written approval before an exterior modification or addition to the home.

Estimates

Estimate Terms for a Hudson Service Upgrade

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

If something fails after the upgrade

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
