Sign Electrical and Lighting in New Port Richey, FL
Sign Circuits and Lighting, Permitted With the Sign|Licensed & Insured, EC13011268
Mention whether the address is in the downtown district.
In New Port Richey, a lit sign can require two permits: the sign permit and, where wiring is required, an electrical permit. The city's sign code requires both to be obtained at the same time, so the lighting is decided before either application goes in.
Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

The Sign Application
The Lighting Details a Sign Application Asks For
An application has to show the sign's illumination: its type, placement, intensity, and hours. The hours are what a timer or photocell is then set to.
The city has two sign applications for 2026, one for the downtown district and one for the rest of the city. On both, the block for an illuminated sign asks for the company, license holder, state license number, and Pasco County number of the contractor doing the electrical work. That block has to be completed even when the electrical contractor isn't the company hanging the sign. When that work is ours, we apply for the electrical permit and schedule the city's inspection. Both forms say a final inspection is required on every permit issued.
Anywhere in the city, a sign must maintain 6 feet of horizontal clearance and 12 feet of vertical clearance from electrical conductors. Where an overhead line crosses the lot to the building, the sign's location and height are measured relative to that line before anything is ordered.
The Downtown district
Downtown Storefronts Get a Shorter Sign List
In the Downtown Zoning District, the permanent signs allowed are wall, projecting, hanging, window, canopy or awning, monument, directory, and sandwich signs. Changeable-copy, freestanding, and portable signs are prohibited, and freestanding here means a sign held up by poles or posts. An awning sign can't be backlit or otherwise lit, and a monument sign tops out at 6 feet.
So most downtown sign power stays on the building: a circuit through the facade to a wall or projecting sign, or power behind the glass for a lit window sign.

The city's Lighting limits
What New Port Richey's Sign Code Lets a Sign's Light Do
The city counts a sign as illuminated if it has built-in lighting, is lit from the outside, or contains any electrical wiring. Its limits on that light decide the fixtures and the controls.
- Light that stays on the sign: The light has to be shaded, shielded, or directed so it doesn't cast directly into surrounding areas. For a sign lit from outside, that means a shielded or narrow-beam fixture aimed at the face.
- One level and one color: No sign may have blinking, flashing, or fluttering lights, or any device that changes the light's intensity, brightness, color, or direction. Scrolling reader boards and strings of light bulbs are on the prohibited list. LED controllers with fade cycles or color-changing modes don't fit that rule, so the controls here come down to a switch, a timer, or a photocell.
- Bare lamps on the sign: Exposed reflector-type bulbs and any exposed light source over 15 watts can't be used on a sign's exterior where the face of the lamp shows to a public street or a neighboring property. Many LED sign lamps draw less than 15 watts, and a 25-watt incandescent lamp doesn't.
Our sign has been dark since the last tenant moved out. Does the city treat that as a problem?
Would converting a grandfathered sign to LED end its status?
Pricing
Estimates and Repair Billing for New Port Richey Signs
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.
Workmanship and materials on a sign job
04If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
