Printed marking on the outer jacket of a house's electrical cable.

A Bayonet Point house from the 1960s or 1970s may have aluminum branch wiring, or it may not. The printing on the cable jacket is where to look.

The Years

The Years Aluminum Went Into House Wiring

Aluminum wire was used on ordinary outlet and lighting circuits in some new houses from 1965 to the mid-1970s. Houses from the 1960s span the start of those years: the Consumer Product Safety Commission's guide to aluminum wiring calls that wiring unlikely in a home built before 1965.

  • Both metals were in use: Copper went into houses built in the same years.
  • Additions and added circuits fall under the same dates: A room or a circuit added between 1965 and the mid-1970s can be aluminum in a house that was built earlier with copper.

Reading the cable

Finding Out From the Garage or the Attic

  1. 1

    1. Cable you can see

Look where cable was left in view: along the framing in an attic, or across an unfinished garage wall or ceiling. Nothing gets opened, moved, or handled, and the attic hatch is far enough if the footing beyond it isn't sound.

  2. 2

    2. The whole marking

The marking is printed or pressed into one side of the outer jacket and repeats every few feet. A flashlight held at a low angle brings out pressed-in lettering. A cable with aluminum wire is marked "Al" or "Aluminum" along with other information, so read as much of the marking as you can. A marking you can read in full with neither word on it points to copper. "CU-clad" or "Copper-clad" beside "Al" or "Aluminum" means copper-coated aluminum, a different wire. If you see either, have an electrician determine how the house is wired. A marking speaks for that cable only, and other circuits can be wired differently.

  3. 3

    3. A jacket that can't be read

Where no cable is in view, or the marking is too worn to make out, an electrician makes the determination. It's the first step of our visit.

Repairs

The Repairs We Make

We make the pigtail repair with AlumiConn connectors, and we rewire in copper where that's the better course. When the work needs a permit, we apply for it with Pasco County and schedule the inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Houses That Seem to Be in the Clear

Our house was finished in 1978. Is that too late for aluminum wiring?

It's a few years past the mid-1970s, but we've found aluminum branch wiring in homes built up to the late 1970s. Go by the cable marking.

Nothing here has ever run warm or flickered. Is a check still worth doing?

A quiet house hasn't answered the question. Failing aluminum connections seldom give an easy-to-detect warning, and some are reported to have overheated with no prior sign.

Estimates

An Estimate for Pigtailing or Rewiring

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Our warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
