How GFCI Protection works
Where GFCI Protection Belongs, and Why It Trips
The places water and power meet
The electrical code calls for GFCI protection where people, water, and grounded surfaces come together. In a newly built or newly wired home, that list takes in:
- Bathrooms and outlets near a sink, tub, or shower.
- Kitchen countertop outlets.
- Garages, sheds, and other accessory buildings.
- Outdoor outlets, including lanais and porches.
- Laundry areas, crawl spaces, and basements.
- Pool, spa, and hot tub equipment, under a set of rules of its own.
The list has grown with each code edition. A home wired years ago can have outlets that met the code of their day and still have no protection in places where a new home has it. Missing GFCI protection is one of the findings we see on the electrical evaluations we do for home sales.
The GFCI you didn't know you had
One GFCI can protect a whole run of ordinary outlets after it on the same circuit. So the device that cut power to your bathroom outlet may sit in another bathroom, in the garage, or on the porch. It can also be a GFCI breaker in the panel, with its own TEST button.
- Outlets protected from somewhere else can carry a small "GFCI Protected" label.
- A GFCI hidden behind a freezer or a stack of boxes still has to be reachable to reset.
What makes a GFCI trip
A GFCI trips when a few thousandths of an amp leak away from the circuit.
- Moisture in an outdoor box, a cover that no longer seals, or a wet cord.
- An appliance with a motor or electronics that leaks current as it ages, such as an older garage freezer or a pool pump.
- Damaged insulation somewhere on the protected run.
- A GFCI that is wearing out and trips on its own.
- Wiring mistakes, such as outlets connected to the wrong terminals on the GFCI.
When a new appliance trips a GFCI, it may need its own circuit.
Testing yours
Manufacturers recommend pressing TEST once a month. The outlet, and the outlets it protects, should go dead; RESET brings them back. If TEST doesn't cut the power, or RESET won't hold, the GFCI needs replacing. Newer GFCIs run a self-test and signal when they've failed, and some won't reset at all once they reach the end of their life.

We identify which outlets share a circuit and where each run starts, so one GFCI in the right spot can protect the outlets downstream.

3. Outlet or breaker
A GFCI outlet at the start of the run, or a GFCI breaker in the panel when the first outlet is awkward to reach.

4. Installation
With the breaker off, we wire the GFCI so its protected outlets land on the correct terminals. Outdoors, it's a weather-resistant GFCI under an in-use cover.

We press TEST and RESET with you, and show you which outlets go dead when it trips.

Price and billing
Pricing GFCI Protection
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.
Our warranty
04If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.
