After a storm in Dade City
Tampa Electric's Side of the Meter, and Yours
The Dade City area is served by Tampa Electric, and its published storm rule splits the damage at the house into two parts:
- Tampa Electric repairs the service line to the house and storm-related damage to the electric meter itself.
- The owner repairs the weatherhead (the rounded cap where the service line enters), the riser pipe that carries the wires down the wall, and the meter box.
Tampa Electric's advice is to know which is which, so you call the right party: the utility for its side, a licensed electrician for yours. On the owner's side, we replace a riser bent or pulled loose by a falling limb, a meter box torn from the wall, and a weatherhead knocked out of line.
If the service line is on the ground or the riser has pulled away from the house, stay clear of it and call the power company. If there is smoke, sparks, or fire, call 911.

Dade City Work Shaped by 1880s Houses and Tampa Electric
Rewiring a house on Church Avenue
Church Avenue grew into a residential street in the late 1880s, and electric power didn't reach Dade City until 1908, when the Dade City Ice, Light, and Power Co. brought it in. Any wiring in one of the street's early houses went in after the walls did, threaded around plaster, trim, and framing older than the circuits. Our rewiring can go room by room or ride along with a remodel, so a Church Avenue house doesn't have to be opened up all at once.
Downtown buildings older than the town's power
The city's register lists downtown buildings such as the Treiber Building (1900), the Griffin Block (1905), and the Touchton Building (1908), each older than Dade City's electric service. A permit for work in one of them can bring in the historic board review described below. A downtown sign, paid for through the city's CRA Sign Grant, also waits on the CRA Board, which must authorize it before any work begins.
A home charger on Tampa Electric service
Because the Dade City area is Tampa Electric territory, a Level 2 charger here comes with the utility's own recommended installation steps and its Energy Planner time-of-use rate as an option. Of Tampa Electric's five steps, the first is finding a licensed electrician, and the assessment, permit, installation, and final inspection follow from that call.
Running a generator while crews rebuild the lines
Tampa Electric had essentially all of its Pasco customers back on by the morning of October 16, 2024, and, in the same update, it warned against connecting a portable generator to a home's circuits, which can send power onto the lines its crews are repairing. An interlock at a Dade City panel keeps the main breaker off whenever the generator breaker is on, which is what keeps that power in the house.

Permits
Permits Inside Dade City Limits
Dade City runs its own building department, so electrical permits for addresses within the city limits are issued by the City of Dade City Building Department on Meridian Avenue. That office is where we pull the permit for a job inside the limits. Dade City North sits outside the limits and follows a different process.
Houses on the city's historic register
Dade City maintains its own historic register, which includes homes, churches, and downtown buildings, and a Historic Preservation Advisory Board. Under the city's ordinance, the building official tells that board within five working days when a permit application involves a registered property, and the board has 45 days to send the owner a "Certificate of Suggestions." If it doesn't, the plans can proceed as long as they comply with the city's other codes.
If your house is on the register, tell us when you call, so the review is part of the plan from the start.

Charges and Estimates
Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.
We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.
We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.
Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.
