Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panel Replacement in Land O' Lakes, FL

Old Panels Out, Every Circuit Moved Across|Licensed & Insured, EC13011268

The Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels still in service in Land O' Lakes sit in the town's older houses, where an insurer's letter or a look behind the panel door can name one. Kennedy Electric takes that panel out, installs a new one, and carries every circuit the old box fed to it.

Stop using the circuits a panel feeds if it's hot, looks scorched, or buzzes, and keep away from it. Smoke or sparks mean a call to 911.

Call (352) 251-2795, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or send a request online. Calls after hours are returned the next business day.

Older Houses, Older Panels, One Pasco Rule

Lake Padgett Estates, whose civic association has served residents since 1975, is one Land O' Lakes neighborhood where houses from the 1970s still stand. By census estimate, about 1,550 occupied homes in town were built in the 1960s and 1970s, the years when Federal Pacific panels were going into houses, and roughly 1,330 of them are owned by their occupants. So in most of those houses, the insurance policy that could flag the panel belongs to the person who lives there. Another 2,800 or so homes, occupied or not, date from the 1980s, the last decade the brand went into houses, so a 1980s house can still have one, and its original panel is past 30 years old either way.

Whichever brand comes out, the new panel is a Pasco permit job. Depending on the address, the service is provided by WREC or Duke.

How it runs

Where the Power Stands at Each Step

  1. 1

Paperwork before the power goes off

The panel change begins with a Pasco permit application that we file. The work date is set once the permit is issued, and the house will be without power while the old panel is out, so plan that day around anyone who will be at home.

  2. 2

    The service is cut

On the workday, the service to the house is shut off in step with the power company serving the address.

  3. 3

Circuit by circuit into the new panel

Once the old panel is out and its replacement is mounted, circuits are connected to it one at a time, and each is tested before the next.

  4. 4

    The county's release, then power

The county's electrical inspector checks the work. Once the final inspection passes, the release goes from the inspector to the power company, and only then can the service be turned back on.

What we cover

Everything Wired Into the Old Box

Feeds that run out from the house: On lakefront property, the run-outs go to a dock or a lift, a well pump, a pool pump, or a detached garage; they move across with the rest and are labeled by what they serve.

Every circuit in the house: Each one is landed on a new breaker made for the new panel and given a name in the directory, so the next person to open the door can see what it runs.

Surge protection, built in from day one: A whole-house surge protector mounts at the panel and covers every circuit, and Florida's electrical code calls for one when the old panel is replaced.

The panel itself: Any panel past 30 years, a Westinghouse, a Bryant, a Zinsco, or a Federal Pacific, comes out whole, and a new panel built to what the permit requires takes its place.

Room for what the house runs now: If the house has outgrown the old panel's size, the quote can set a larger panel beside the like-for-like one, so the two can be weighed on the same page.

Pricing

A Written Quote for the New Panel

01

The estimator counts every circuit that will be moved to the new panel and notes the size of the panel the house needs before the written quote is drawn up.

02

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

Our warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Common questions

What Owners Want Settled Before the Change

Our Land O' Lakes lot has a dock lift and a well pump. Do those go on the new panel too?

Yes. The dock lift and the well pump are on the new panel, along with the house circuits. If the wiring out to the dock or the well needs work of its own, that's a separate job from the panel change, and you can decide on it separately.

Our old panel has an interlock for a portable generator. Does it move to the new panel?

No. An interlock is the plate that prevents the main breaker and the generator's breaker from being switched on together. Each kit is made for one particular panel, so it comes off with the old box. To keep running the generator through the house, ask for an interlock made for the new panel when you send the request, or for the other route, a manual transfer switch, which suits a panel that can't take an interlock.

The house dates from the 1970s and the panel is a Zinsco. What goes in its place?

A panel from a maker whose breakers are still sold. We recommend Square D, including its QO line, or Siemens, so a breaker added or replaced later can be one listed for that panel. If you'd rather have one make than the other, say so when you send the request.

We rent out our Land O' Lakes house. Can the tenants stay while the panel is changed?

They can stay, though the house will be without power from the shut-off until the county releases it. If the lease sets a notice period for work inside the house, pick a date that allows for it. Send the tenants' contact details with your request, so the day is planned with whoever will be home.

Can the breakers from the old panel be used in the new one?

No. Breakers from a Federal Pacific or Zinsco box aren't built to fit a different maker's panel, so none of the old ones carry over to the new one.
