Electrical Permits by Kind of Lift

Electrical Permits by Kind of Lift

Within the city limits, dock and lift permits are issued by the city's Development Services department. Not every canal lot with a Port Richey address is inside the city, and one outside it goes through Pasco County.

The city's dock and boat-lift checklist has two lines for the wiring, and it treats three kinds of lifts differently.

01

A new lift with a motor

Wiring for a new lift with a motor is permitted in one of two ways, and the lift application decides which. If the lift contractor lists an electrical subcontractor, the wiring goes in under the lift permit. If the wiring is left off, it takes its own electrical permit.

02

A lift that's already on the dock

Here, the city asks for an electrical permit, with plans showing how the lift will be connected to power. Connecting a lift requires a circuit from the house panel, a route to the seawall, a switch at the lift, and ground-fault protection; that wiring is our work.

03

A manual lift

A manual lift needs neither an electrical subcontractor nor an electrical permit. Fit a motor to it later, and the line for a lift that's already on the dock applies.

Billing

Dock and Lift Billing for Port Richey Customers

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

03

Repair and troubleshooting visits are billed by the hour from arrival: $100 residential, $150 commercial, one-hour minimum, then half-hour increments, plus materials. No trip charge and no service fee. No hidden fees: the 3.5% surcharge on card and ACH payments is listed in our terms.

Warranty on wiring we install over the water

04

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

More on the City's Lift Permit

The dock already has an outlet. Can the lift run from that circuit?

Only if that circuit suits the motor. It may have been sized for a receptacle or a light, and the motor's nameplate lists the current it draws. If the lift needs a new circuit, or the old one is extended to reach it, that work takes an electrical permit.

I'm pulling the dock permit myself as an owner-builder. Who does the wiring?

The wiring can be handled by a licensed electrician under a separate electrical permit. The dock or lift permit stays in your name. The city's owner-builder permit is for work on the home you live in.

Does the city inspect the wiring apart from the dock?

On a job with a buried run between the house and the seawall, expect the underground inspection before the trench is filled. For the dock itself, the city lists one inspection, a final.
