New USB-C outlet installed by Kennedy Electric in a kitchen in Brooksville, FL.
  • Added where you need them: Desks, beds, workbenches, and the kitchen island.
  • Moved when the room changes: A new spot where the furniture allows.
  • Three-way switching: Control a light from both ends of a hall or stairway.

Count the adapters and power strips in your kitchen or home office. Each one marks a spot where the house needed an outlet and didn't have one. Then there's the light switch at the wrong end of the hallway.

We add outlets where you use power, move the ones furniture now hides, and change old devices for USB-C and tamper-resistant outlets. Switches get the same treatment: added, moved, or replaced when worn.

Choosing outlets and switches

The Outlet Behind the Couch and the Switch at the Wrong Door

01

Outlets for what you plug in now

A house wired decades ago was planned around a lamp and a clock radio. Phones, laptops, tablets, and countertop appliances ask more of it, and the fix is outlets in the right places, with the right faces.

  • USB-A and USB-C combination outlets, so chargers stop taking up the plug.
  • Tamper-resistant outlets.
  • Standard replacements for outlets that no longer grip a plug firmly.
02

Adding an outlet, or moving one

A new outlet can be fed from a nearby circuit when that circuit has room for the load. Where the circuit is already busy, or the outlet is for a heavy appliance, it gets its own circuit. Moving an outlet means removing the old box, or blanking it with a cover plate, and extending the wiring to the new spot. How the cable reaches it depends on the attic above, the wall it runs through, and what is already in that wall.

03

Switches where your hand reaches

A single-pole switch controls a light from one place. A pair of three-way switches controls it from two, such as the top and bottom of a staircase, and a four-way switch adds a third. We add switches, move them to the side of the door that opens, and replace worn ones.

04

"My outlet doesn't work": check the switch first

Some rooms have an outlet controlled by a wall switch, installed so a lamp can be turned on from the doorway. Sometimes it's the whole outlet, sometimes only the top or bottom half. Turn that switch off, and the outlet goes dead, which can look like a failure. Before you call about a dead outlet, flip the switches near the room's entry and try the outlet again.

If the outlet stays dead with every switch tried, it's a repair visit.

Outdoor outlets

Outdoor Outlets for Holiday Lights and Decorations

Holiday lights, inflatables, and spotlights all need somewhere to plug in outside. When one outlet runs the whole yard, or the cords come in through a door or window, it's time for more outdoor outlets.

01

Outlets where the decorations go

We add outdoor outlets where you'll use them, so cords don't have to stretch across the yard or come in through a door.

  • Weather-resistant outlets made for outdoor use.
  • In-use covers that close over the plug, so the outlet stays protected with a cord plugged in.
  • GFCI protection, which code requires on outdoor outlets.
02

A circuit that can carry the display

If the breaker trips the moment the display comes on, that circuit is carrying more than it was built for. More plugs on the same circuit won't fix it.

  • We check what else already shares the circuit.
  • Where it's needed, the outdoor outlets get a circuit of their own.
  • If the panel has no room for another breaker, we'll check what it can handle.
03

Book before you decorate

Have the outlets and circuit in place before the lights go up, so the display is ready when you are.

Estimates for installs

Getting a Price on New Outlets and Switches

01

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

02

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

Where the cost comes from

03
  • How many outlets and switches, and whether any need a new circuit.
  • Attic access above the wall, and what the wall is made of.
  • Cabinets, tile, or a finished ceiling in the cable's path.

Our warranty

Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

What People Ask About Outlets and Switches

Will electricity leak out of a broken faceplate?

No. Electricity stays in the wires and the device; it doesn't seep out into the room. The plate is there to keep fingers and anything metal away from the live screws and wires behind it. With it cracked, those parts are easier to touch, so replace it soon and keep children away until you do. If the outlet itself is cracked, loose in the wall, or pushed back into the box, don't plug into it. Turn off its breaker and have the outlet replaced.

Will my house catch fire because an outlet doesn't work?

A dead outlet is one with no power reaching it, and on its own, that isn't a sign of fire. The signs that matter are warmth at the plate, a burning or hot-plastic smell, scorch marks, buzzing, or sparks when you plug in. If you notice any of those, stop using the outlet, turn off its breaker if you can reach it safely, and call. Call 911 if there is smoke, fire, or sparking that doesn't stop.

Why is it so hard to plug into my new outlets?

They are tamper-resistant. The shutters open only when both prongs push in evenly and simultaneously, so a key or hairpin in one slot meets the plastic. Push the plug straight in, not at an angle, and it will go.

Can a USB-C outlet charge my laptop?

Some can. USB-C outlets are rated for a set charging output, and laptops need more than phones. Check the watts your laptop's charger supplies and choose an outlet rated for that, or tell us the model and we'll suggest one.
