Portable Generator Hookups in Bayonet Point, FL

Portable Generator Connections, Planned Ahead of Storm Orders|Licensed & Insured, EC13011268

A portable generator hookup in Bayonet Point is easiest to plan in a quiet month, long before the county decides who has to leave. Kennedy Electric puts the inlet on an outside wall and fits the panel with an interlock kit or a manual transfer switch, sized for the generator you own or plan to buy.

When the County Sorts Who Leaves

As Hurricane Milton approached in October 2024, Pasco sent out two groups that matter for power at home. Every household in a mobile home, a manufactured home, or an RV, wherever it stood in the county, had to leave, and everyone who would be vulnerable in the event of a power loss was asked to go voluntarily. Whether a household stayed or left decided what a hookup would be for. A generator hookup belongs in that same planning.

Roughly 650 of Bayonet Point's mobile homes are lived in, by census estimates, and an order like Milton's tells every one of those households to leave, so a hookup there has to be finished and inspected before the season, since nobody will be home when the order comes. A site-built house whose household stays is the other case, with the generator feeding chosen circuits through the panel for as long as the outage lasts and the fuel holds out. Either way, the inlet and its wiring are interior and exterior home wiring, the kinds of work Pasco's residential electrical permit lists, and we apply for that permit. Beacon Woods' deed restrictions require the association's written consent before wiring that may protrude through the walls is installed.

How it runs

On the Calendar of a Storm Order

  1. 1

    Months before any order

The estimator looks at the generator's outlet panel, the house's panel, and the outdoor spot where the generator can run on firm ground, and talks through which circuits you want it to carry.

  2. 2

    The permit and the installation

We file for Pasco's permit, then the inlet is mounted on the wall, and the interlock or transfer switch is fitted to the panel.

  3. 3

    Waiting on the inspector

We book the inspection of the finished hookup, and the county sets its date, one more reason to start months ahead of any order. The hookup waits for that inspection before its first use.

  4. 4

    If the household stays

The generator runs outdoors, away from doors, windows, and vents, and never in a garage. The cord goes to the inlet, and only the circuits you need are switched on. If water reaches the panel or any wiring, nothing goes on, the generator included, until an electrician has checked it.

What we cover

Four Decisions Behind Every Hookup

Where the generator will run: The inlet goes on the wall nearest an outdoor spot clear of doors, windows, and vents, and at an attached villa, clear of the neighbor's as well as your own.

Which panel it feeds: In a house whose household stays, it's the main panel the generator will carry through the outage. In a mobile or manufactured home that has to empty out under an order, it's the home's own panel.

How circuits are chosen: An interlock lets you switch circuits on at the panel itself and keeps the main and generator breakers from being on together, which keeps generator power off the utility's lines. A panel with no interlock kit made for it gets a manual transfer switch mounted alongside.

How big it is: The generator's largest outlet, usually 30 or 50 amps, determines the inlet size, and the generator breaker and wiring follow from it.

Pricing

The Cost Side of an Inlet Hookup

01

Custom homes and large or multi-phase projects are estimated as soon as we can, or on the timeline your project sets.

02

We don't do upfront pricing. No job has a standard price with us: each one is tailored to the property and the work you've asked for, and priced once we've seen it.

We offer free estimates on installs, upgrades, and replacements in our service area. Estimates aren't free when the job needs troubleshooting or testing to price, falls after hours or outside our service area, needs several meetings to gather information, or is new construction or a custom remodel with multi-party walk-throughs. For most jobs, estimates arrive by email by the end of the next business day, and quotes are good for 30 days.

Our warranty

03

If something we installed fails because of our workmanship within 30 days of completion, we waive the hourly labor to put it right. Materials Kennedy Electric purchases for your job carry the manufacturer's one-year warranty. To replace defective materials we supplied, or materials damaged by storm, flood, fire, or other acts of God, we charge a reduced warranty labor rate of $50 an hour residential and $75 an hour commercial. The warranty does not cover materials not purchased by Kennedy Electric, work performed by the customer, or materials the customer purchased or damaged. Our warranty terms are printed on the estimate, the invoice, and the receipt, and the product boxes stay with you so you can register each product with its manufacturer.

Common questions

Living With a Hookup Through an Order

The generator for our Bayonet Point house has a 50-amp outlet, but we only need a few circuits. Does the inlet still have to match it?

Yes. The inlet follows the outlet the generator's cord plugs into, so a 50-amp outlet gets a 50-amp inlet, and the generator breaker and the wiring are matched to it. How many circuits run is a separate choice, made at the panel or the transfer switch each time the generator is on, so the hookup doesn't commit you to running more than you need.

Milton's order asked anyone vulnerable in a power loss to leave. Does a hookup change that?

No. A hookup doesn't make a house a safer place to ride out a storm, and the county's order is the one to follow. What the hookup changes is the connection itself: a household that does stay runs the generator through one inlet, with the circuits it carries picked at the panel.

Can the generator start and run on its own while we're evacuated?

No. A portable generator runs only when someone starts it, fuels it, and watches it. One that starts on its own when the power drops is a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, which we don't install. A portable unit left running outside an empty home could also run dry or overheat with no one there to notice, so before you leave, it stays off and stored.

We rent the house out. Who arranges a hookup?

The owner, since it's a permanent change to the house and its panel, and the permit is pulled for the owner's property. Whether the tenant may run a generator through it and who keeps the generator are matters for the lease. If the tenant will be the one using it, have them there when the electrician walks through the switch-over.

When the power comes back, how do we switch off the generator?

With an interlock, turn the generator breaker off first, then the main breaker can go back on, since the plate won't let both be on at the same time. With a transfer switch, each circuit's switch goes back to the utility side. Shut down the generator outdoors before unplugging its cord from the inlet.
